Community Trauma Response Program

825 Arts will provide for the acute need for community access to safe, healing, creative spaces through their new Community Trauma Response Program. The goal is for this to be a responsive program available to the public any time there are events that provoke collective grief or trauma. In addition to offering creative resources, 825 will provide the community with information that directs them to low-cost/affordable mental health services, access to emotional and spiritual healers and bodyworkers, and places to find free food for people in need.

Artist of The Month

Every month, we choose an artist from our community to spotlight & uplift! These artists are featured on our website and social media and participate in our monthly B-art-BQ.

October’s Artist of The Month is El-Funoun Popular Palestinian Dance Group!

Introducing October’s Artist of the Month, El-Funoun!

El-Funoun Palestinian Popular Dance Troupe is a dance group inspired by Arab-Palestinian popular dance in particular, and world dance in general, developing artistic productions that express the feelings and ideas of its in-house creative artists and contribute to liberating the individual and society at large. They were kind enough to answer some questions about their work below, read on to learn more!

El-Funoun will be performing at 825 Arts October 24th and 25th. Learn more on our Shows Page!

1. ) What inspired El-Funoun?

Rooted in the belief that artistic expression can serve as a transformative force, El-Funoun views dance not merely as performance, but as a vital space for liberation both the individual and society at large. Since its’ inception, El-Funoun has always viewed dance as an expression of freedom that can simultaneously be a strategy of defiance, and a weapon of resistance.

2.) When was El-Funoun born? What motivated the start?

Founded in 1979, El-Funoun emerged with a powerful mission: to revive and preserve Palestinian dance and music in the face of threats of cultural erasure. It started out by a small group of enthusiastic, creative and committed artists. El-Funoun members are motivated by their sense of belonging to the homeland, and strong belief in the creative vision of the Troupe.
The Troupe has developed an innovative style of dance deeply-rooted in Palestinian and Arab folklore and informed by elements of contemporary dance movement. Sustained almost entirely by volunteers for decades, El-Funoun is a non-profit dance company with close to 300 members.

El-Funoun’s mission is to revive and innovate Palestinian music, song and dance. A motivation that carries the group from the beginning until now is to create dance productions that reflect social issues and infuse the relation between authenticity and modernity. This work also invests in providing space for youth to express themselves artistically and creatively; and strengthen their relationship with their cultural heritage.

3.) Where are you located?
Ramallah and Al Bireh District, Palestine is the home of El-Funoun. Located in the occupied West Bank of Palestine.

4.) What artistic influences guide El-Funoun’s work? What inspires El-Funoun?

El-Funoun is guided by the Palestinian people and the rich cultural heritage rooted in their land and history.
“Dance has always been present in our community as it is a form of everyday action. In traditional societies the movements would be inspired by working the land and the natural environment” (Noora Baker). Music style and content heavily influences dance movements. In more recent history, Palestinian songs are heavily rooted in political resistance. Women are featured prominently in the songs and are portrayed as strong and willing to fight for their land (literally).

5.) Anything else folks should know about El-Funoun?

Recognizing culture as a tool of and for resistance, El-Funoun challenges the complicity of international aid agencies in the oppression of Palestinians by refusing politically conditioned funding from agencies that have failed to call for a ceasefire. Their work is therefore funded from people-to-people resource sharing and solidarity.
