Community Trauma Response Program

825 Arts will provide for the acute need for community access to safe, healing, creative spaces through their new Community Trauma Response Program. The goal is for this to be a responsive program available to the public any time there are events that provoke collective grief or trauma. In addition to offering creative resources, 825 will provide the community with information that directs them to low-cost/affordable mental health services, access to emotional and spiritual healers and bodyworkers, and places to find free food for people in need.

Artist of The Month

Every month, we choose an artist from our community to spotlight & uplift! These artists are featured on our website and social media and participate in our monthly Art-B-Q.

November’s Artist of The Month is Good Camel Comedy Theater!

Introducing November’s Artist of the Month, Good Camel Comedy Theater!

Good Camel Comedy Theater is a comedy improv group that has set out to make theater accessible to all by creating open, fun, and accepting spaces where anyone can take the stage. They were kind enough to answer a few questions for us, which you can read below:

1. What inspired Good Camel?

Good Camel was born from a belief that our stages should reflect the city we live in. Too often, comedy spaces didn’t represent the people who make this city dynamic and give it heart. John Gebretatose founded Good Camel to change that, to make room for Black and Brown artists to create, perform, and be seen without having to justify their presence. It’s comedy built on representation, truth, and joy.

2. When was Good Camel born? What motivated the start?

Good Camel started in the fall of 2024, but the work behind it began long before that. After years of building community through improv, it became clear there needed to be a place where Black, Indigenous, and People of Color could learn and create comedic work year-round. A place built on access, honesty, and laughter that feels like home. In 2025, Good Camel launched two monthly BIPOC Improv Jams, one at 825 Arts and another at Showtime Studio. More than just theater, it’s a reminder that improv and the performing arts thrive when everyone has a place in the story.

3. Where are you located?

Good Camel Comedy Theater is based in the Twin Cities. We partner with venues and organizations across the metro, bringing comedy and storytelling into spaces where laughter builds connection and belonging.

4. What artistic influences guide Good Camel’s work? What inspires Good Camel?

Good Camel’s comedy is rooted in truth, curiosity, and care. We learn from improv teachers, and from Black and Brown activists and academics around the world who’ve shown how art can build power and community. Our work is grounded in lived experience and inspired by artists who use comedy to tell the truth, spark dialogue, and bring people closer together.

5. Anything else folks should know about Good Camel?

Good Camel is about practicing freedom through laughter. We believe comedy is a way to show up for people. Our programs, from the BIPOC Improv Jam to Mini Caravan and Improv for Connection, are built so anyone can take part in the creative act. We carry forward the teachings found in Black and Indigenous traditions, that joy, story, and play are forms of survival and resistance. We’re still growing, but we know this much: when people feel safe to play, they show up and play as they really are. And in doing so, they’re reminded of who they truly are..
